Cops strike for 100% pay hike

Kosovo's elite police squad began a strike Thursday to demand a 100-per-cent salary hike, spokesman Arbresh Dalipi said.

Authorities have started negotiations with the 200-member unit tasked with protection, anti-riot and anti-terrorist action.

An average police salary is about $275 US a week. The 7,000-strong police force has been mainly trained internationally after being established by a United Nations mission that took over administration in Kosovo in mid-1999 following a civil war.
